The root meaning of this word is probably visible in the Assyrian nab-, "to call, proclaim," so that the n?bi, or prophet, was the ???????? or spokesman of God, the herald of heaven to earth. (Comp. the name of the god Nebo, Nabi'um, who answers in the Babylonian Pantheon to the Greek Hermes.)
